A horse begs for attention on a ranch near Cleveland, Montana.

In many ways horses are like people; all with their own personalities and quirks.

Resolve

Resolve

A portrait of a rancher and cowboy south of Lloyd, Montana.

There are a lot of hard working people out there, but there is a ruggedness unique to the people who ranch here in central Montana.

Ranching is hard, gritty work, and many of the men and women who work this land (and the animals on that land) reveal much in their face. Their eyes are pools of a certain determination and resolve unique to their way of life.

Talk to any rancher. Their way of life is a vanishing way of life. That would be unfortunate, I suppose. Because in every rancher and cowboy there is an essence that once was the cornerstone of our proud country.

I don’t know what it means for us once it is gone.

These inquisitive cattle greeted me as I came over a hill west of Lloyd, Montana.

A row of telephone poles south of Havre, Montana blanketed in a spring snow.

This is one of the final scenes from this year’s late season snow falls here near Havre, Montana. I haven’t had a chance to upload this one until now. It’s one of those images I suspect I like more than most other people.

Crevace

Crevace

A tree pops its head over the horizon somewhere on the open prairie west of Kremlin, Montana.

I’m not used to wildly changing landscapes. Back home we just had hills. Sure, there were parts of Wisconsin that were flatter than others, but for the most part, the terrain didn’t change much.

Here in Montana, however, the landscape is as fickle as the weather. When you drive down a random, lonesome highway you will pass through mountains. The next minute you will pass through smooth, gentle foothills. And the next minute you experience land that is as flat as glass. I guess that’s one reason I like Montana so much…there is so much variety.

I took this photograph when I was waiting for a train to pass by. I couldn’t have been in a more flat portion of Montana. As I waited to photograph that passing train it began to feel as though I was standing in the same exact spot where Tom Hanks was in the final scene in the movie “Castaway.” Yes, it was that flat…and empty (except for all the mosquitoes).

As I waited to take my picture I was reminded that as a photographer, inspiration can rise up from even the most mundane places. One just needs to open his or her mind and scour the landscape for opportunities. As I was standing there waiting for my ever elusive train to pass by I spotted this tree poking its head over the horizon. What a wonderful sight, I thought.

So I photographed it.

Just another sign at just another railroad crossing. They are everywhere out here.
